Qatar Petrochemical Co. Ltd

QAPCO is a multi-national joint venture, having ISO-9002 Quality accreditation. It produces ethylene, low-density polyethylene(L.D.P.E) and solid sulfur.

Share-holders of QAPCO are QGPC (80%), Elf Atochem of France (10%) and Enichem of Italy (10%), sharing the capital of QR436 mn. The Petrochemical complex was the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf and the Middle East when it came on stream at the end of 1980.QAPCO net profits amounted to QR.625 mn in 1997 .

Total strength of employees is 805 on 31 May 1998 in which 24.35% Qataries, 37.5% Arabs, and 38.13% non Arabs.

The Company achieved record figures in production and sales during the past eight years. QAPCO is marketing 50% of its LDPE production in GCC and other Middle East markets in addition to India, Pakistan and Australia. Elf Atochem and Enichem handles the marketing of the balance in other markets especially those of South East Asia and the Far East, according to an agreement concluded with the shareholders. QAPCO will undertake the responsibility of marketing its products by the year 2000.

As for ethylene, QAPCO sells the available surplus quantity of about 150,000 to India, South East Asia and other countries through long-term and short term contracts directly concluded with consumers.

The implementation of the project commenced on 26 March, 1994 upon the signing of the project contracts with the French Company Technip, the Italian Company, Snamprojetti and the French-Italian Company T.P.L.QAPCO Expansion project is inaugurated on 26th June 1996.

The operation of this project has achieved the following objectives :

1. Increasing the ethylene production capacity from 330,000 tpa to 525,000 tpa (Technip Contract)

2. Doubling the production capacity of low density polyethylene (LDPE) to reach 360,000 tpa from the previous capacity of 180,000 tpa. (Snamprogetti Contract)

3. The construction of various utilities including water desalination and power generation units, nitrogen producing plant and other services necessary for the project.
